Each year since 1993, the City of Falls Church Tree Commission has nominated a Tree of the Year. The Tree of the Year is a native Virginia tree that is no longer prolific in the City and merits reintroduction and promotion. The tree must also be available for purchase and planting. During the year, City and volunteer efforts focus on planting street and park plantings of that species. In addition, private landowners are encouraged to consider this tree for planting, if their property conditions are favorable for the species. Following is the list of the current and past City of Falls Church Trees of the Year: 2005 - Swamp White Oak (Quercus bicolor) 2004 - Redbud 2003 - American Basswood 2002 - American Hornbeam (Carpinus) 2001 - Eastern Red Cedar 2000 - Scarlet Oak 1999 - White Oak 1998 - Paw Paw 1997 - River Birch 1996 - American Persimmon 1995 - American Hophornbeam (Ostrya) 1994 - Sourwood 1993 - Tupelo (Black Gum) |
