Composting makes sense and can save you dollars and time. By composting your yard waste, you can avoid the trouble and cost of buying peat moss, bagged mulch, and bagged manure and fertilizer. Also, composting greatly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills while returning critical organic matter to your property's soil. The soil in most of our yards in Falls Church is compacted clay, which means that it is greatly in need of organic matter to break it up and support beneficial organisms.
The Virginia Tech Extension Service makes available the following information on what composting is, how to compost, and what to do with your finished compost:
In addition, free classes are offered at the City of Falls Church Backyard Composting Demonstration Site at Cavalier Trail Park each spring and fall. Contact the City's Recycling Coordinator at 703.248.5176 for more information.
