Child Development and Toxins
By Rebecca Weissman, M.S. (and Falls Church resident)
Why do one in six children have significant
learning difficulties such as attention deficit
disorder, dyslexia, aggression, or autism?

Why is asthma the leading chronic illness
afffecting children under the age of five?

Why is childhood cancer on the rise?

Why is population level genetic change
too slow  to explain recent trends?

What do toxins have to do with it?

Unfortunately, toxins have a lot to do with the disturbing problems listed above! It is
no longer in question that the current proliferation of man-made toxic chemicals into the
environment is harmful to all of us but especially to our children who have increased exposure
at younger developmental stages. Citizens/parents seeking information on this topic may find
the following helpful.

BOOKS:
Our Stolen Future, Theo Colbourne, Dianne Dummanoski, & John P. Myers, 1996. This book
gives a historical perspective as well as scientific evidence on how we are threatening our
fertility, health and intelligence.

Our Toxic World: A Wake-Up Call, Dorris J. Rapp M.D., 2004. This book is written by an
allergist and environmental physician about prevention, identification and treatment of
environmental illnesses.  Parents who suspect that their children struggle with allergies usually
love this book.

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Children's Vaccinations, Stephanie Cave M.D.,
2001. This book is written by a mother and pediatrician and speaker at many national medical
conferences.  She discusses the current vaccine controversy and recommends and altered
vaccine schedule for children with immune issues.

Patient Heal Thyself, Jordan Rubin, N.M.D., 2003. This book is written by a naturopathic
physician.  Excellent nutritional strategies for most chronic illnesses.

Children with Starving Brains: A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disorder,
Jacquelyn McCandless M.D., 2003. This book is written by physician and grandmother of a
child with autism.  Autism spectrum disorder is now defined as not only autism but also
sensory integration dysfunction, attention deficit disorder, some learning disabilities, pervasive
developmental disorder, aspergers syndrome and other related disorders because they
originate from the same root biomedical causes.
